Overview of the Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities
(IDD) Waiver Unit & Services

The Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Waiver Unit, formerly known as the Developmental Disabilities Program, is responsible for the oversight of service providers and support systems of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities receiving funding through the Intellectual and Development Disabilities Waiver.  The purpose of the waiver is to offer a choice between home and community-based services and institutional care for people who meet waiver service criteria.

Possible services available for select persons on the IDD Waiver include respite care, community inclusion supports, residential supported-living, nursing oversight, care coordination and various other services.

ELIGIBILITY

• The State of Alaska recognizes that completing and submitting the application for eligibility (Eligibility Determination and Request for Services form) can be a frustrating process. The Short-Term Assistance & Referral Programs (STAR) are available to assist persons in learning what is required to meet the state law definition of developmentally disabled , navigating the eligibility process and understanding what services, other than waiver, may be available. The STAR Roster provides a contact list of Short-term Assistance & Referral Programs available throughout the state.
  
  
• The Eligibility Determination and Request for Services application requests information about an applicant’s service needs, current services received functional capabilities and lists the required documentation for consideration.
  
  
• An instruction manual is available.

 

WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM DETERMINED ELIGIBLE FOR SERVICES?

• Because the State of Alaska is dedicated to affording choice to applicants, various avenues to obtaining services are available. Two of those avenues are the IDD Waiver and Grant Service.
  
  
• IDD Waiver-- this waiver offers a choice between home and community-based services and institutional care for people who meet waiver service criteria. Possible services, available for select persons on the IDD Waiver, include respite care, community inclusion supports, residential supported-living, nursing oversight, care coordination and various other services. If you choose to apply for the IDD waiver services you must complete the Developmental Disabilities Waiting List Registration and Review (DDRR). Completion of the DDRR does not immediately begin IDD Waiver services. Please carefully read the DDRR webpage for a clear explanation. Should you need assistance in completing the DDRR please contact a STAR representative near you.
  
  
• Grants Services – This service assists families and individuals experiencing Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Alzheimer’s Disease and related disorders, family caregivers of seniors aged 60 and over, grandparents raising grandchildren aged 55 or over, seniors aged 60 and over or frail/disabled seniors in need of assistance in the home.
