Giving Back to the Community
Part of the restorative justice philosophy is “repairing the harm.” This concept includes repairing the harm done to the community as well as to the victim. The majority of juveniles who are involved with Juvenile Justice are assigned community work service towards this effort. This includes youth that are placed in secure youth facilities. Youth facilities work to assist juveniles in giving back to the community in a variety of ways. A number of facilities cultivate gardens to grow flowers and vegetables that are donated to local community food banks and senior centers. In Nome, the Sitnasuak Native Corporation provides a fish camp for residents to use and in return, fish is donated within the community. Other projects include crocheted baby blankets, assisting local animal shelters in training shelter dogs for adoption, assisting in US Forest restoration projects, participating in Adopt-a-Highway litter programs and talking with younger children about their experiences. These efforts provide an invaluable lesson about being a positive and contributing member of their community and the sense of pride, accomplishment and well-being that can result from helping others.
