Performance-based Standards (PbS)
Since 2004 all Juvenile Justice facilities have participated in the Council of Juvenile Correctional Administrators’ Performance-based Standards (PbS). This year all the facilities earned a PbS Level status to recognize and reflect their progress toward increased data integrity and higher-than-average outcomes.
The Nome Youth Facility and the Johnson Youth Center Detention programs both earned a PbS Level III status and continue to work toward the highest established level of IV. Congratulations to these high achieving DJJ programs and their staff who are dedicated to the continued compliance with the PbS standards!
PbS and the Division continue to place a great deal of importance on collecting quality data, analyzing the results and embarking on structured improvement activities throughout the year to evaluate and improve the way services are being delivered to delinquent kids and their families. This past year the Facility Improvement Plan process included a comprehensive approach to the implementation of the new statewide Suicide Prevention policy for all DJJ facilities.
During Fiscal Year 2009 national PbS consultant Tom Turos toured the 12 Alaska PbS sites located within our facilities. He noted the consistency with which Juvenile Justice facility employees screen youth for health and mental health problems, and intervene and care for suicidal youth via the new suicide prevention policy.
